Breathe with a smiling heart and live with a tolerant heart

Continuing the religious and ethnological style of creation formed by Taipei Folk Dance Theater for years, The three latest works--Smile, Fallen Flower and Emptiness, created by the choreographers of Tsai Li-hua, Hsiao Chiin-Ling and Hu Min-shan respectively, portray the Buddha's legend of The Blossoming Smile of Enlightenment 2500 years ago.

The Blossoming Smile of Enlightenment is a dance drama that catches the special spirit and thoughts of the local Taiwanese. In the silent and profound time and space, it catches the vivid spiritual image of Chan Buddhism, narrating the joy of the Dharma from meditation in the current life.

Box----A review.

It was called box. It was a dance performance and I chose it because it seemed contemporary, different and unusual.

It definately was all three.

Set in practially somebody else's house, the stage was merely a black room with several stools placed in the back for the audience to sit on. A huge mirror glared back at us and revealed our confused, slightly worried faces...

The box man performance started with a mere beam of light and a young woman dressed in white dancing slowly against a mirror, her reflection glowing back at the audience like an appartition. The music was limited to the slow chime of bells. The dance included the contrast between extremely slow movements and a sudden rush of fast twisting and spinning motions. It was definately very interesting.  We only found ourselves wondering why it was called "box".
  But by the second part of the performance we realized why. It began with the back door opening to reveal a man (? Although it was the same women) standing in the doorway, dressed in a business suit, a tie and a clip board. Oh yes....and a cardboard box over his head. That was when the "box" of "box" kicked in. The dance included two other "boxed" men and consisted of jumping on chairs and dancing with pencils, cellphones and binders. It really brought out the stress and intensity of work and pressure with one of the dancers actually having a seizure at the end of the routine. The music was very interesting, a combination of a squealing chicken and your mother singing in the shower----but in a good way. It definately helped move the dance along and gave it a more sinister, mysterious feel.

 The dance was definately odd. But somewhat revealing and calming. When walking out into the humid, hot streets of Chang Ping road section one number 43 I had a sudden feeling of complete truth. An apithany of sorts. Then I went into 7-11 and bought a Slurpee...

Dude! I love 愛玉!! Ever since the first time I ate it the quest to find the ultimate 愛玉 has been the only thing my life revolves around. Lemony...wobbly....sweet...tangy. The tingly sensation you get when you suck the soft jelly out of the straw...or scoop it out of a bowl with a spoon. I can't stop eating it. I have become an addict. Whenever I eat 愛玉 all I can think about is where the next 愛玉 is gonna come from. I can't sleep. I can't think. I have started to neglect my family. I have got to stop. I have got to put an end to this insanity....

...BUT FIRST...

Let me tell you where you can get the BEST 愛玉 in town!

Less like the good old-fashioned 愛玉 and more similar to your usually lemon juice...just will jelly. Good-tasting? Definitely. A nice tangy sour-sweet flavour. You can even get it with 珍珠, which is nice and chewy...not hard and bland like some other types.

Definitely (and forgive my dull use of adjectives) a very, very good-tasting brand. Just like your old grandmother makes it. You really get the urge to scoop out the spoon from the  愛玉 man's bowl and just start pouring 愛玉 into all your pockets so you can bring it home with you. Sickly-sweet in the best way possible. Lemony, and the jelly is very pleasant and soft. Worth travelling around the world for.

You can't beat the good old classic-styled 愛玉! Why bother turn it into a multinational chain store hit? 愛玉 is made for the pleasure and excitement it provokes when you eat it...and 哇!青蛙下蛋 did this. Well...maybe I'm exaggerating. But damn....I LOVE 愛玉!!!!!!





 

No-one (including frogs) were harmed in the making of this 愛玉. Except for the reviewer who drank three cups of 愛玉 on the day of reviewing and that night was victim to an 愛玉 overdose.

Through the Storm Reveiw

I Survived "Through the Storm"
After seeing this exhibition I have never thought of computer games in the same way. I am a gaming fan. I am also an art fan (nice combination, don't you think?) and this exhibition was a very interesting collaboration of both. For those that question the art of "The World of Warcraft" should really visit MOCA  2010/8/20 to 2010/10/10  to find themselves proved wrong and learn new things about the art of computer graphics. Incorporating both Gothic art themes and science fiction, Through the Storm is definitely a new approach to art. Don't go, however, expecting top class contemporary art. But DO GO prepared to "wow!" at the creepy exhibition set-up and learn something new...

What is it?
This exhibition includes two sets of artworks; one is a spatial installation and the other is a documentary video. The two sets of works appear to be in neat order, but in actuality, they are constantly changing with every passing second and minute. The large stick-shape thermometers come together to form an installation in the given space, and as the audience walks in and out of the installation, subtle changes would occur. In addition to the “interaction” between people and the objects, there is also a sense of “conspiracy” between the people. At the same time, the audience could further speculate and understand about the interactive ways presented in Morizumi’s art through the documentary video.

In this play, Shih-wei WU ingeniously applies the well-known storyline of Greek myth and combining it with modern love affairs. Art Taipei Review

The name “Art Taipei” might not make the event seem like the amazing cultural experience that it is....but don't be fooled. The event takes place in the Taipei World Trade Center Exhibition Hall 1. The many exhibition halls, the many similar sounding roads and the many sections – A,B,C,D to name afew – might make the place hard to find if you are unfamiliar with the whereabouts. But as soon as you enter the enormous hall, the cold conditioned air soaking and refreshing you and the smiling faces of sophisticated looking art enthusiasts, you know it is worth it. The hall is huge, and each 

artist's work divided off from eachother by huge white boards. It may seem overwhelming with the huge variety of genres and the huge difference of techinque, talent and country of origin (many artists were from abroad, Japan, Singapore, Germany) but displays an impressive amount of talent despite the few ads. and the huge size. Sculptures, paitings, works made from all sorts of material, nails, books, buttons, wooden stubs, it really gives you a great taster of the many,many types of art and the different techniques one can use when exressing themselves. Our visit reminded me of walking through a grocery store with enthusiastic sales men/women asking you to try a sampler of their high quality product. This exhibtion had everything, and above all displayed asian modern art as not read about in books. A good idea, however, if your really there to see some impressive and unique things, you should pick up the Art Taipei maps and look out for works that may suit you. There is no doubt that no matter what kind of artist you are, or even how familiar you are with it, after walking through the whole of Taipei World Trade Center Exhibition Hall One, you definitely leave feeling like you've matured a little. Or at least...that the air conditioning has refreshed you.

What is it?
In support of Andy Mueller’s ‘Never Stop’ photographic installation which has already been exhibited in L.A and Tokyo, G-SHOCK and Juice brought the third leg of the tour to Taipei were a reception and gallery opening were held outside the latters’ door. Aptly named the G-SHOCK Art Gallery, the space will house several of Mueller’s G-SHOCK inspired work from August 13 to August 27.
